About Us



The Equity, Quality, Innovation and Safety (EQuIS) Research Platform’s mission is to improve the quality, safety, and equity of surgical care provided to children and adults who need surgery in Alberta, in Canada, and internationally. Our vision is to define the future of healthcare for children and adults who need surgery. Towards this end, EQuIS supports projects that bring innovations to pre- and perioperative health systems; improve operating room (OR) access, efficiency of patient flow and resource use; develop teaching strategies and education technology in the OR to enhance patient safety; improve and promote equity of care in surgery; improve patient and family experience.


EQuIS Research is based at the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) in Calgary, Canada, and represents a diverse group of clinical researchers, partnered with local, national, and international organizations dedicated to healthcare quality improvement.



Funding



EQuIS Research is supported through a variety of funding sources, including the Brian and Brenda MacNeill Chair in Pediatric Surgery (Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation), CIHR, the UCalgary Cumming School of Medicine, and the AHS Strategic Clinical Networks (SCNs), including Surgery and MNCY.


Funding opportunities are pursued on an ongoing basis.



Operations



Our team graciously acknowledges the research spaces provided by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) at ACH.



Management



EQuIS Research represents an academic platform within the UCalgary Cumming School of Medicine, and operates within AHS. As such, we adhere to the research guidelines and standards set out by these institutions. Our group furthermore benefits from UCalgary human resources and accounting services.

SERVICES



Supporting your research through EQuIS



A portion of the MacNeill Research Chair in Pediatric Surgery is reserved towards supporting other pediatric surgical researchers at ACH in their projects. Incoming research projects are screened for compatibility with EQuIS goals before approval. Projects that meet our selection criteria are issued an in-kind research agreement. Staff skills are then matched to research needs, and support work begins.



Study Design



Our team can assist with formalizing your project and align it with funding and research ethics board requirements.



Grant Identification & Editing



Our experienced staff can identify appropriate funding opportunities for your project and assist with the development and review of proposals.



Ethics Applications



Ethics applications require adherence to a rigorous set of guidelines, with deviations causing significant delays in the approval process. Our team has built resources that will help you streamline your REB submission.​
